A MESSAGE TO THE PRESS

ABOUT THE DECEASED SOLDIER AHARON KETZEF

JANUARY 5, 2000

While the government of Israel is debating the issues, in an attempt to lead the region towards a lasting peace, the solder Aharon Ketzef passed away, after seventeen years of suffering from the effects of a wound in the Lebanese war.

This is a painful reminder of the results of that war and should serve as a candle at the feet of our present leaders to light their way along the road to bringing about the change for which we are all hoping, that is, an end to this cruel war that is still going on in South Lebanon.

We lift up a prayer that the death of Aharon may be the last casualty in this blood-stained war, that we may be privileged to see an end to it and that normal life and tranquility return to the North. We still feel the pain of the human losses and hope for a better future.

We are astonished to hear that the same government that is now negotiating for peace cannot find the proper budget for a safe withdrawal from Lebanon. The Ministry of the Treasury is not giving to the army the funds needed to build the outposts and border fences for defending the local residents.

How can it be that for two decades so much money was invested into financing the continuation of the war , yet today, when budgets are required in order to end the fighting, we encounter an empty treasury, with no money available. How come that this lack of money did not arise during all the past years, when funds were drowned into that cursed swamp. And how can those financial losses even start to compare with the heavy loss in the young lives that were cut short in that morass?
