NOTICE TO THE PRESS 6 February 2000

IDF SOLDIER YEDIDYA GEFFEN KILLED IN ACTION

The stricken families had not yet risen from the seven days of mourning over their sons who had fallen last week in South Lebanon and we have already been informed of more victims whose fate has been sealed in that cursed war.

Each week that passes brings a new harvest of young lives.  The bloody game, which seemed to have calmed down for a certain period of time, has revived with full intensity.

Everyone already knows that our protracted presence in the Lebanese quagmire is superfluous. We are counting down the days remaining until Prime Minister Ehud Barak keeps his promise to leave Lebanon in peace. Unfortunately, in parallel with this countdown, the number of soldiers who are becoming casualties of the Lebanese roulette is constantly increasing.

We demand from the Prime Minister not to intensify the cycle of horror by escalating the war. He must find a solution through immediate negotiations leading to an agreement. And what happens if he does not? We must then leave this Zone of Death.

Tomorrow, Monday, the Four Mothers movement shall renew its vigils of mourning. The central vigil shall take place at 4:30 pm opposite the Ministry of Defense, at the David Gate to the Kirya compound in Tel Aviv.
